There’s something about Halloween with little boys that makes the season especially fun.
Pumpkin carving that gets far messier than planned. Chocolate cookies covered in icing. Face paint that probably won’t look quite like the picture you were copying. Trips to the pumpkin patch, crisp afternoons outside and, of course, deciding what everyone is going to wear.
At Me & Henry, we think Halloween can be about much more than one night of costumes. It’s an entire season of little traditions, family days out and plenty of opportunities to make memories.
So, pull on a sweater and join us for a few of our favorite ways to celebrate Halloween this fall.
WHY ORANGE?
It’s almost impossible to think about Halloween without thinking about orange.
From glowing pumpkins to changing leaves, orange has long been the color of the fall harvest. As pumpkins became one of the most recognizable symbols of Halloween, their unmistakable shade followed - making orange part of the season’s visual identity.
But dressing for Halloween doesn’t have to mean wearing a costume.
Rusts, warm ochres, browns and pumpkin tones are an easy way to give a little nod to Halloween while still choosing something your boys can wear throughout the rest of fall.
Pair an autumnal shirt or tee with denim, cords or neutral trousers for a look that feels festive without being reserved for October 31st.
THE PERFECT EXCUSE TO LAYER UP
Halloween arrives right when getting dressed starts to become a little more interesting.
Cool mornings call for shirts under sweaters, jackets thrown over tees and all those cozy textures that have been waiting in the wardrobe for fall to arrive.
If you’re heading to a pumpkin patch, trick-or-treating or spending the afternoon outside, layers are your friend. Start with a comfortable tee or henley and add an overshirt, knit, sweatshirt or jacket that can easily come off when little boys inevitably start running around.

CARVE A PUMPKIN TOGETHER
It wouldn’t be Halloween without a pumpkin.
Picking one is half the fun, but once you’ve managed to get it home, the big question is: what are you going to carve?
The classic jack-o’-lantern is always hard to beat, but this is also a chance to let the boys come up with something of their own. Try a silly face, a ghost, stars and moons, a favorite animal or even let them draw their design onto the pumpkin first for a grown-up to carve.
And if the result looks nothing like the original plan? Even better.
Those are usually the pumpkins you remember.
TRY SOME HALLOWEEN FACE PAINT
Not every Halloween look needs an elaborate costume.
A little face paint can turn clothes they already love into something completely different. A skeleton, friendly monster, little vampire, spiderweb or even a simple pumpkin face can make an ordinary outfit feel ready for Halloween.
It’s also a great option for boys who aren’t particularly interested in dressing up - or for the afternoon Halloween party that somehow slipped your mind until that morning!
Keep the clothes simple underneath and let the face paint do the work.
BAKE SOMETHING SPOOKY
October is also an excellent excuse to make something sweet.
Chocolate Halloween cookies are one of our favorites because decorating them can become as much of an activity as baking them. Cut chocolate sugar-cookie dough into pumpkins, ghosts, bats or whatever Halloween cutters you have hiding in the kitchen drawer, then let everyone loose with icing.
They don't have to be perfect. In fact, we’re fairly certain the ones with far too many sprinkles taste better.
Pop on an apron, accept that there will be flour everywhere and make an afternoon of it.
HEAD TO THE PUMPKIN PATCH
Of course, we couldn’t talk about fall without mentioning one of our favorite traditions: the pumpkin patch.
Pumpkins, hay bales, cornfields and all those beautiful fall colors make it one of the best places to spend an October afternoon - and, conveniently, one of the best backdrops for family photographs too.
Choose comfortable clothes the boys can actually explore in, add plenty of texture and stick to warm fall shades that work naturally with the surroundings.
And take more photographs than you think you need.
The posed family picture might be the one that ends up framed, but the muddy boots, enormous pumpkin they insisted on carrying and completely unplanned moments are often the ones you’ll love most later.
HALLOWEEN, THE ME & HENRY WAY
For us, Halloween isn’t just about October 31st.
It’s pumpkin patches and chilly afternoons. It’s carving pumpkins at the kitchen table, baking together, dressing up, wrapping up warm and watching the leaves change.
